Software to the rescue

An evolving scientist has always been intrigued by this photo of his father. It was taken, presumably near their Croydon, Surrey residence. Was the horse possibly a third birthday present?

Time to experiment!

Using AdobeTM Lightroom ClassicTM, the photo has been considerably enhanced by tweaking contrast, clarity, highlights and ‘dehazing’. The amount of extra detail revealed is particularly satisfying.

This post in memory of my father, who would have been 110 years old today.

Sydney, 26 June 2020

Sorry, that is smoke, not rain!

Normally these radar scans would suggest some decent rainfall. Sadly, for many days now, they are showing the smoke from bushfires.

Two weeks ago, this post was about Sydney blanketed in smoke. Not every day has been like that because of changes in wind direction. However, records have been set on three days with the index being 10-15 times the safe level for breathing. Today, 21 December is such a day. With temperatures rising above 40C, a number of fires have been declared at emergency level (red). Note: The fire map extends further south than the radar scans.

Blazing away on Six Word Saturday

Everybody is talking about the heat

Of course, it is summer, after all.  Thing is, though, there seems to be compounding evidence of global warming. Massive fish kills in rivers where there is no flow and blue-green algae take over. The state had four days of heatwave this week. New records were set in several towns, both maximum daytime (47C) and minimum overnight (35C).

In the greater metropolitan area of Sydney, the range yesterday was 30C on the coast (thanks to the sea breeze) to 45C in western suburbs.  We peaked at 40C at 3:15pm.

Today, a blissful cool change has given relief, and the air-conditioner takes a rest.

Forecast is for another heatwave for next week!
