This week’s challenge asks us to “be a tour guide in your local area”!
Flying into Sydney is always spectacular because of the harbour. Up to the middle of the last century, it was also notable for its predominant red terracotta tiled roofs. The building fashion of the 1950-1960 period was houses built of red texture bricks. Another fashion, a bit later, was that mission brown was used everywhere, for trim, guttering and the like.
Now, everyone seems to want to go grey! In this area, perfectly functional houses built in the 1950-1965 period, are being replaced with bigger homes. Grey rendered walls, grey trim, grey fences. You name it, grey everywhere! At least it’s not mission brown!
These properties were all photographed within a 1 kilometre radius of a northern Sydney suburb, around 18km from the CBD.
An entry in the weekly photo challenge “Tour guide”. This post is also dedicated to Yvette, who can be found at priorhouse.
Mission grey.
LOL. I guess the difference is that ‘Mission Brown’ was a colour, whereas we now have many shades of grey, from nearly black to nearly white!
My neighbour is selling her house and she has just had its brown bricks painted grey. It was probably recommended as a sure thing for a quick sale. Grey is the new brown.
I suppose our ‘fair bianca’ and ‘half hog bristle’ interiors are now passé as well, Trish ?
I’m looking to move out west in the U.S. (Arizona) where terracotta roofs remain the fad. The dessert offers a unique lifestyle. Very much looking forward to this move.
I neglected to mention we still have terracotta tiles available, mostly glazed, but even they come in ‘grey’ as well as the traditional browns/reds. Good luck with the move, Jonathan
Beautiful area, Ken…My house is gray… beam me down!
You are welcome any time, Jane 😉
