WPC : Ascend

He alights from the train; his destination, Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle. Unsurprisingly, they occupy the high ground. A walk of just over a kilometre. The shortest distance appears to be through the town centre. The road, becomes a lane, but the cathedral remains in sight. The ascent gets steeper. Later he discovers that, typical British humour has applied. The last section is simply called “Steep Hill”.

A rather late response to the WPC : Ascend

Weekly Photo Challenge : Relic

My ‘relic’ is only around fifty five years old. No self respecting science or engineering student of the 1950s and 1960s would have been without a slide rule such as this. Many of today’s students may not even recognise one!

The box indicates how well loved, and used, mine was. Better still, it is as accurate today as when it was brand new. Oh, and there was no fear of the batteries running low on this beauty!

This is my entry in the weekly photo challenge at The Daily Post, where many more entries will be found.

Weekly Photo Challenge : Room

We loved this room at Sanssouci1 Palace. Sanssouci is the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, in Potsdam, near Berlin.

We were particularly taken by the music stand in the foreground. Can you imagine Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart giving an intimate private recital here, perhaps?

1 Although many references show “Sanssouci” as one word, the actual words appear on the front of the building as the two French words “Sans Souci”. Clearly, Frederick’s intent was that this palace was to be “carefree”.  There is a suburb of Sydney with the same name, although the French are appalled by the way Australians pronounce Sans Souci…..

Ben Huberman came up with this week’s photo challenge, to “share your take on the idea of room — it could be an actual room in your house, a favourite gallery in your local museum, a cubicle at work.” More entries will be found here at The Daily Post
