Just kidding – needed the zoom lens!
Many cruises take in tropical Queensland. For those wanting to explore Cairns and the tropical hinterland, Cairns itself is not accessible to the larger ships. Instead they moor off Yorkeys Knob. Passengers are taken ashore in tenders, and join their sightseeing tours by coach from there.
Palm Cove is about 15km by road, maybe 12km as the crow flies, from Yorkeys Knob. We thought we spotted a ship, and used the camera to identify it!! Later we drove to Yorkeys Knob to observe the logistics. The featured shot at top resembles the “naked eye view” from Palm Cove.
Yorkeys Knob got its name from George Lawson, a Yorkshire-born (b.1839), Cairns-based fisherman (d.1907).
